On June 26, 2018, the H-1B TechHire Technical Assistance Team held a small-group peer-learning call on “Innovative Strategies for Serving Incumbent Workers.” Deborah Kobes, a Director at Jobs for the Future, shared a range of strategies to support employer engagement in incumbent worker training programs.
The robust conversation included specific recommendations to engage with small- to medium-sized employers for incumbent worker training, since large companies often have in-house training programs. The conversation also highlighted how strategies to train incumbent workers differ from those targeted at unemployed and underemployed workers. For example, while unemployed and underemployed workers often need to learn a full range of technical skills, incumbent workers typically need to only refresh or pickup additional skills in order to advance within the company. The resources attached, several of which Deborah shared during the call, feature best practices for employers that aim to effectively serve incumbent workers.
